Technology: Discovered, Not Invented

Entry Purpose: This entry is a reminder that Computer Technology was intended to aid and not to hurt. A tool to help achieve and not to damage. To help build and not destroy. A science that the Lord blessed humanity with. And with the gift of free will, to harness it's power and therefore with it, comes responsibility.

My 11 year old son asked me, "Mom who invented technology? If Franklin discovered electricity, someone clearly found out about technology...right?" I paused to ponder and felt that part of his question revealed the answer. Technology was not invented but rather discovered in  multiple levels, taking one step forward and sometimes in big leaps. It is the product that carries out technology that is invented. A look back in this science, The Computer History Museum depicts an informative summarization of the evolution of Computer Technology from 1939 through 1994. From the invention of the HP 200A Audio Oscillator used in Walt Disney's 1940 movie “Fantasia” to the arrival of the World Wide Web in the early 90's.

The Back and Front Door

I'd like to think of a computer as if it were a house with its entry points. The back door and the front. For needed fixing at home, maintenance entries are normally through the back instead of the front; hidden from plain sight and access limited compared from the front. Unfortunately, for the same reason, in the occurrence of a planned break-in, the entry point is commonly through the back. Likewise computer technology has a back portal also called as the back end and the entry point of both hardware and software maintenance while the front end is for users and consumers.  I remember  my freshman year in computer study back in the late 80s. No graphics, no clickable images to carryout a command and no mouse to move the cursor around. I will be honest in saying that as a parent and concerned adult, I miss those days. Because one thing I know as far as the back door of computer technology is concern, no minor will even find staring at a black canvass screen with only a blinking green cursor waiting for a type written command interesting. And even the troubleshooting plain requires a combination of codes and not something that's as easy as clicking away opening folders and sub-folders from the desktop.

The Back End

As the years moved forward, so did technology take great leaps in advancement. When a new device, a software to carry out the discovered power of technology is invented, rest assure that in a few months using the same concepts yet adding perks be it a better interface or better navigation  control at its smallest form, a new tool is again created having the strength of its predecessor and none of its weaknesses. And so it goes on and on for these newly invented self explanatory softwares and applications including for web base and it's release for both front and back ends that drove large consumer market demands.

As one who is in this field, I am always looking forward to what new devices are out there to dissect, study and try out. But, as a mother I am disappointed with the hurry of its release in the market  lacking caution and sense of responsibility and the only cautionary slapped on a product label is for their benefit and protection of rights on their new money making gizmo.

I love this field. It is the course of study I have had my heart and mind set on since I was 12. Long before I even thought of becoming a mother. But, even though technology has been a part of my life longer, and even though I loved this study of science many years before I was a parent. My children is the very heart of me since I conceived them. The corruption of the power of technology is what destroys. An enemy which unfortunately resulted from the abuse of many of those who were gifted with the knowledge to make a contribution for humanity's sake but instead allowed the power of technology to be one of the devil's playground.

Knowledge is a God given gift. However, without the guidance of the Lord......"Knowledge will never be Wisdom."
